Addictions

Addictions affect people in many ways and attack in many forms. For some people it is substance based – often tobacco, alcohol, prescription or other forms of drugs.  For others, it is behavioural – gambling, sex, shopping or eating-related.

But whatever the form, addictions take their toll, on your health, on your finances, on your relationships, on your career, on your mental wellbeing and on many other areas of your life.

Addiction is an illness which makes the user totally powerless to control their behaviour.  It is extremely destructive, and can be fatal.  It is estimated that addiction affects approximately one in ten of the UK’s population, and this is mirrored in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Addiction is often a way of anaesthetising a person’s feelings and helping them cope with their lives.  But all the time it’s eating into that person and creating bigger problems in their life.   This is because the addicted person does not have the necessary coping mechanisms to deal with their feelings more appropriately.

The important thing is to treat the illness and the underlying cause, not the symptom. Treating only the symptom can lead to a user simply swapping addictions and using something else to change their behaviour. And the big danger is that the substituted addiction might be more harmful than the original.

Unfortunately one of the most common and most powerful symptom of addiction is denial.  But once a person has accepted the possibility that there ‘could‘ be a problem the therapy has a much better chance of working more effectively.
